Transportation Model
The transportation model below demonstrates the average cost per trip for Wake Forest students who decide to volunteer at one of fifteen select locations throughout Forsyth County and travel to that location using the Uber app. To create this model, we selected different school settings no more than ten miles from campus and altered the time requests to account for variations in traffic and driver availability.
Based on this model, which assumes a lack of alternative transportation options for students and no formal university partnership to provide a reduced rate for travelers, it would cost a Wake Forest student an average of $304.80 ($20.32 per round trip) to get to and from a volunteer site once per week for an entire semester (15 weeks).
For these fifteen students to travel to individual volunteer sites once per week for an entire semester, the total cost would be $4,572.00.
For these fifteen students to travel to individual volunteer sites once per week for an entire year, the total cost would be $9,144.00 being paid.
Thus, the average cost being paid out of pocket by fifteen Wake Forest undergraduates--the equivalent number of students to a single university class--to serve in their local community once per week for an academic school year is more than $9,000.00.
